We have taken the plunge and moved our kids to the Westport Central School district, and things seem to be working out well so far. Except for the parent communication bit, by which I mean that David was the parent in charge for the first three days of school, then I got back from Seattle, exhausted and jet-lagged, and not everything that needed to be communicated got said, or at least not remembered by me. I've been in charge for the second 3 days of school. (We are happily married; for the time being we have the problem of owning more houses than we like.)
My general plan is to have our bookstore open in the afternoons when the kids get home from school and for them to do their homework in the nice sound-insulated space afforded by the store. We more or less did that today, except that Liz was supposed to stay for the after-school program so I could go to a yoga class.
Nonetheless, a pleasant afternoon was had by all. Earlier today I went garden-shopping in Vermont and bought the grass seed necessary for patching the lawn, the straw for protecting the rosebushes, and lots of interesting bulbs so our garden at 10 Champlain should look great next spring.
I had planned to stop at Horsford's nursery on my way back to the ferry, but the car was full of straw, so there would have been no room for any new plants, so I didn't stop there. I did, however, discover Shelburne Orchards, which I hope to get back to some time next week.
