ESSEX COUNTY
Countywide primaries are scheduled for district attorney and sheriff.
Minerva, Ticonderoga, Westport and Willsboro have Republican supervisor races on the ballot for this year's primary.
In addition, town-council contests are scheduled in Minerva, Moriah, Ticonderoga, North Hudson and Schroon.
Crown Point, Elizabethtown, Newcomb and North Hudson have highway-superintendent races.
District attorney: District Attorney Julie Garcia (R-D) will face challenger Kristy Sprague (R) in the countywide Republican primary.
Garcia, a Westport resident, has held the office for four years, and her challenger also ran against her in 2005. Sprague is a Moriah native who is taking a leave of absence from her job as a Clinton County assistant district attorney and just moved from Plattsburgh to Willsboro.
Sheriff: Incumbent Henry Hommes (R-C) is running against Michael "Ike" Tyler (R) in the countywide Republican primary. Hommes is a retired state trooper, while Tyler is a state correction officer.
Crown Point: Four Republicans are seeking two seats on the Crown Point Town Council: Robert Patnode; Walter Worth; Thomas Walter, an incumbent; and Mary DeHart-Ross.Patnode is retired from Crown Point Telephone Co., Worth operates a restaurant, Walter works at International Paper's Ticonderoga mill, and DeHart-Ross is a retired town justice.
For highway superintendent, incumbent Eugene Ingleston (R) is facing Cory Armstrong (R).
Elizabethtown: A race for highway superintendent pits incumbent Dennis Aubin (R-D) against Arthur Glenn Muller (R).
Minerva: For supervisor, David LaBar is facing Paul Clickner in the Republican primary. LaBar operates Morningside Camps and Cottages in Minerva, while Clickner works for the town parks and recreation department.
Incumbent Supervisor Michael McSweeney is not seeking re-election. The winner will be up against Democrat Sue Montgomery Corey, a power-utility consumer advocate, in November.
Two Town Council posts are being sought in a Republican primary by Douglas McCall, an incumbent; Eric Klippel; and Keith Dubay. McCall is a contractor, Klippel is a pharmacist at Glens Falls Hospital, and Dubay operates K&K Auto Repairs in Minerva.
Moriah: For two posts on Moriah Town Council, the Republican primary features incumbent Richard Carpenter, Timothy Garrison, Laura Baker and Eugene Williams Jr.
Carpenter is retired from the Essex County Social Services Department, while Garrison works at an automobile dealership, Baker operates a tavern, and Williams is employed by United Airlines operations.
Newcomb: A Democratic primary has highway superintendent Mark Yandon, the incumbent, facing John Helms.
North Hudson: For Town Council, two seats are sought by Republicans Ronald Moore, incumbent; Roscoe Herrick; and Daniel Wachowski.
Moore works at B.F. Goodrich Aerospace in Vergennes, Vt.; Herrick is a retired correction officer; and Wachowski is a former television weatherman.
The winners will face Jean Gokey (D), co-owner of Gokey's Auction Service, in the general election.
For highway superintendent, the Democratic primary race is between Kelly DeZalia, who already has the Republican endorsement; Kevin Duntley (D); and James Colaneri (D), who is now deputy highway superintendent.
Schroon: The Town Council has two seats that Republicans Meg Wood, incumbent Roger Friedman and Bruce Caza are seeking.
Caza is a former North Hudson town supervisor, while Friedman runs a real-estate business, and Wood works for Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward.
Ticonderoga: The big local Republican primary race is for Ticonderoga supervisor, with Robert Pell-deChame (R-D), Debra Malaney (R) and R. William Grinnell (R) running.
Incumbent Supervisor Robert C. Dedrick is not running for another term.
Pell-deChame is a community advocate and fundraiser for a national suicide-prevention hot line, Malaney is marketing director for the Ticonderoga Best Western, and Grinnell is a general contractor.
For Town Council, two seats are sought by Republicans Jeffrey Cook; Robert Thatcher Sr., an incumbent; Steven Whitford, an incumbent; and Jorja Sanders.
Cook is the retired town police chief, while Thatcher is a retired restaurant owner, Whitford is a retired police officer, and Sanders operates a commercial real-estate firm.
Westport: The supervisor job is sought by Bruce Dunning (R) and Bruce Ware (R-C) in the Republican primary.
Dunning is a retired State Police investigator, while Ware operates a real-estate business.
The winner will go against incumbent Daniel Connell (D), a retired county Cooperative Extension agent, in November.
Willsboro: For Willsboro supervisor, Republicans have a choice between incumbent Lori Lincoln-Spooner and former Supervisor Robert Ashline.
Ashline, who operates a specialty fruit business, lost to Lincoln-Spooner in the last election.
For town justice, the Republicans have Gregg Dickerson running against Kenneth Coonrod, the incumbent.
I attempted to register to vote in time for the primary, but will have to sit this one out since I didn't do it early enough. But I will be able to vote in the general election.
